Abstract

PURPOSE: The decarboxylation of a carboxylic acid is conducted in the presence of diazabicycloalkene to produce a product suitably used as a fuel without thermal decomposition with the number of carbon atoms and unsaturated bonds kept correspondingly to the starting material.
CONSTITUTION: An unsubstituted or substituted carboxylic acid is decarboxylated in the presence of a diazabicycloalkene such as a compound of the formula (n is integer of 2W11; m is integer of 2W6; each ring may contain lower alkyl substituents), preferably, further a copper salt, especially a cuprous salt such as cuprous chloride or bromide. In this process, the thermal decomposition of the product is prevented and the product of carbon atoms corresponding to the starting carboxylic acid is obtained in high yield. Further, when an unsaturated carboxylic acid is employed, the unsaturated bonds are kept as they are. The operation is simple and the combination with a copper salt shows the more remarkable effects.
