Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between an aromatic amine and acrylonitrile is conducted in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and water to produce the titled compound used as a synthetic intermediate of dyes in high purity and high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between an aromatic amine and acrylonitrile is carried out in the presence of a transition metal catalyst such as ferrous chloride or copper acetate and water to produce the titled compound almost quantitatively. The amount of the added water is more than 0.1wt% based on the amine, preferably more than 1wt%. When necessary, a phase transfer catalyst or organic solvent is added. The addition of water promotes the reaction and prohibits the formation of biscyanoethylated product, resulting in selective formation of monocyanoethylated product.
