Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of p-tert.-butylbenzoic acid with vinyl acetate is conducted in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a solid catalyst of supported palladium as the major one and of a copper compound and an alkali metal compound as cocatalysts to produce the titled substance with no side-reactions in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: As the major catalyst, is used a solid catalyst in which metallic palladium and/or palladium compounds are supported on carrier surfaces and as cocatalysts, are used a copper compound containing at least one halide, preferably bromide, and an alkali metal compound to effect the reaction between p-tert.- butylbenzoic acid and vinyl acetate, preferably at a molar ratio of 1/(3W15), to produce the titled compound. The molar ratio of the halide, copper compound and alkali metal compound to the p-tert.-butylbenzoic acid is (0.001W0.01): (0.001W 0.01): (0.005W0.05): 1.
