Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the stability of a crucible so that a charged sample is effectively melted by a method wherein an annular recess is installed to form a neck section on the vertically intermediate section of the outer surface of the crucible base with which is a cylindrical side wall forms a graphite crucible.
CONSTITUTION: A graphite crucible 21 consists of a properly thick cylindrical side wall 22 and a base section 23. An annular recess 24 is formed in the vertically middle section of the base 23 so that a necked section 23e is provided. The upper electrode 25 is mounted on the top end of the graphite crucible 21 with a proper pressing force. In the internal space A of the crucible, a passage 25a is installed to pass inert gas such as helium gas. Because the necked section 23e has a diameter shorter by the amount of recess depth than other portions, current concentrates on the necked section 23e so that a highest temperature is obtained in the area centering around the necked section 23e and including the inner base surface 23b.
