Abstract
PURPOSE:To automate the compensation of the length of a tool, the detection of its wear and detection of its damage, by dispensing with the measurement of the tool length but performing only the input of the approximate length of the tool to a tape to enable the proper working of a workpiece. CONSTITUTION:A reference gauge 6 is thrusted on a length measuring unit 2. A contact member 2a is displaced to the middle position of the stroke of the unit 2. A zero reset signal is sent from a sequence controller 4 to a display unit to perform zero setting. A tool 7, the length of which is approximately determined, is attached to a spindle 1 instead of the reference gauge 6 and is so positioned that the contact member 2a is pushed in. It is judged by measurement with the length measuring unit 2 whether the length of the tool 7 exceeds a zero-set point or not. Measurement data from the length measuring unit are automatically entered through the external data input section of a numerical controller 5 to set an offset quantity in a tool compensation memory. The tool 7 is positioned at the zero-set point on the length measuring unit 2 on the basis of a compensation quantity in the tool compensation memory.
