Abstract
1364292 Gauging diameters and tool movement THOMAS MERCER Ltd 22 June 1972 [23 April 1971] 11152/71 Heading G1M [Also in Division B3] A gauging apparatus comprises a first probe 3 for measuring a dimension of a workpiece, a second probe 2 for measuring displacement of a tool reducing the dimension of the workpiece, and a gauging unit adapted to display values sensed by the probes. The apparatus may be used in a machine for turning or grinding cylindrical workpieces. As described the probe 2 senses the movement of a grinding wheel and probe 3 is mounted in a caliper 4 for measuring the diameter of the workpiece 5. A changeover switch 11 connects one or other of the probes to the unit which has a further switch 12 so that either English or Metric units are shown on a display 6. Each probe is associated with a zeroing control 9, 10 and a calibration control 7, 8. The apparatus is set by inserting a master in the caliper 4. The unit has a range of DÀ1" or 2mm, and the master is selected from a range according to the desired diameter of the workpiece. In use, the master is placed in the caliper which is adjusted so that the unit displays the size of the master. The grinding wheel then effects one or more initial units in the workpiece and, with the switch operative to connect probe 2 to the unit, the display is adjusted to indicate a convenient number, say 1000. When the caliper is engaged with the workpiece, the desired diameter is subtracted from that indicated by probe 3 when the switch 11 connects that probe to the unit. Thereafter, with switch 11 activated to connect probe 2 to the unit the workpiece is ground until the subtracted amount referred to above is added to the above convenient number i.e. 1000. In another embodiment, hand operated wheels 14, Fig.2, can be set to the desired dimension and, with a workpiece in the calipers, a 'store' button 15 is pressed and the difference between the actual size and the size set on the wheels is indicated on a display 13. During traverse grinding, a hold switch is operative so that only the size at one end of the traverse is indicated. The read-out may be by meter instead of digital and the unit may be in the form of an air gauge rather than electronic.
