Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title flux free from a danger in handling unlike conventional metallic Na, reacting with molten metal gently, and reducing absorption of gas in molten metal by melting an Na saltbase mixture and cooling the melt to form the solid flux.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of Na salts, i.e., NaCl and NaF is melted in an iron crucible furnace by heating to a temp. above the liquidus line, poured into a mold, and solidified by cooling to prepare an Al alloy improving solid flux. By changing blending ratio of NaCl and NaF, the m.p. of the flux can be changed, and the form can be varied easily with the mold, etc., so the reaction rate can be regulated. In addition, since the Na content of a molten Al alloy can be adjusted easily by changing the amount of the flux added, unevenness in Na content occurs very little unlike conventional metallic Na or powdered flux, and the quality of the resulting molten Al alloy can be stabilized.
