Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a hypereutectic graphite cast iron excellent in periodic damping property and wear proof through the control of the amount of free graphite present above the eutectic temperature and the total amount of carbon to 1% more than that of the eutectic graphite and less than 10% respectively by adding Ni-plated pulverized graphite to a molten iron containing a slight amount of Ti.
CONSTITUTION: Ti is added to a molten white pig iron containing 3.8% Si or so at a rate of 0.05 to 1.0%. The molten iron is heated and maintained at 150°C above the eutectic temperature (1145 to 1180°C) under an inert atmosphere or in vacuo. Then, Ni-plated pulverized natural graphite of less than 80 meshes is added to the molten iron while swirled by stirring with an aluminium rod or the like. After the sterring is continued for a while, the molten iron is poured into a metal mold. In this manner, a hypereutectic graphite cast iron excellent in periodic damping property and wear proof, containing free graphite of 1% more than the amount of eutectic carbon with the total amount of carbon controlled to less than 10%, can be yielded without the production of kish graphite.
