Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform the on-line measurement of the quantity of austenite contained in a steel sheet having a mixed structure composed of two phases, ferrite and austenite, by irradiating the steel sheet with characteristic X-ray, and by detecting the diffraction X-ray with a position-sensitive X-ray detector.
CONSTITUTION: A high tensile steel sheet composed of mixed structure of ferrite and austenite phases is heated to a temp range Ac1WAc3 and is cooled rapidly to produce steel sheet for the exterior of automobiles, which is composed of ferrite and martensite phases and is excellent in press-formability and in spot-weldability. To regulate the quantity of martensite phase at a suitable degree, the quantity of the austenite phase prior to the rapid cooling is measured and adjusted. For that purpose, the steel sheet 7 on-line is irradiated with parallel beam of characteristics X- ray from an X-ray tube 1-2. The diffraction X-ray from the ferrite phase and the austenite phase are detected by a position-sensitive X-ray detector 1-3, and, after waveform analysis, the total sum of the diffraction X-ray for each phase is determined. The quantity of the austenite phase in the steel sheet is measured continuously while comparing the ratio with the correcting curve.
