PURPOSE:To measure the austenite quantity in a steel plate and use the result for control of the austenite quantity, by irradiating parallel beam characteristic X-rays into the face including the plate surface normal of the rolled steel plate and by detecting a diffracted X-ray intensity for a prescribed time. CONSTITUTION:Measuring head part 1 is constituted by gathered construction measuring part A and austenite measuring part B, and white X-rays made into parallel beams are irradiated from a fixed-angle direction to the plate surface of rolled steel plate 7, which is in the two-phase mixture construction state of ferrite and austenite, in the course of the running line of this plate 7, and crystal from adjacent ferrite and austenite phases or one diffracted ray of the grid surface are detected, and the diffracted X-ray intensity for a prescribed time is counted. The austenite quantity of steel plate 7 which runs while being supported by carrying roll 8 is measured in on-line real time while correcting the gathered construction.
