Abstract
PURPOSE:To reinforce the structural strength for a display device of vacuum envelope construction when it is enlarged and easily prevent implosion of its envelope, by arranging the dimension of plate thickness and coefficient of thermal expansion for its cover glass smaller than those for its glass base board. CONSTITUTION:On a glass base board 1 a cover glass 2 is placed, applied a sealing process at the prescribed sealed surface by the method of using a soldering glass 5 and evacuated air to constitute a vacuum envelope. The dimension of plate thickness and coefficient of thermal expansion for the cover glass 2 in a plate display device of such a type as described are arranged smaller than those for the glass base board 1 respectively. For instance, the cover glass 2 is fabricated from a window plate glass of linear expansion coefficient of about 99X10<-7>/ deg.C and the glassbase board 1 from a bottle glass of linear expansion coefficient of about 107X10<-7>/ deg.C simultaneously with the plate thickness of the latter not less than 50% larger than that of the former. In this way, a difference of shrinkage between the both materials of glass after the sealing work can be converted into a compressive strain of the cover glass 2 to decrease a tensile strain due to the evacuation of air as shown by an externally directional arrow marks in the drawing, resulting in the reinforcement of the structural strength.
