Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the development of internal defects at the cut surface so as to improve casting capability and yield, by cutting a slab longitudinally at the grooves made in the cast slab because of the narrow path formed in the mold in the advancing direction of the cast slab, by pressure snip forging of the cast slab on the casting line near the grooves after completion of solidification.
CONSTITUTION: Grooves 4 are made in a cast slab 2 by forming narrow paths 3 on the positions of mold 1 corresponding to the positions of the cast slab 2 where the slab is to be cut. The cast slab 2 is cooled in a cooling zone 5, straightened by a straightening machine 6, then it is drawn off. Subsequently hammer edges 10 are pressed simultaneously from both sides in opposition to the grooves 4 of the cast slab by a pressure snip forging machine 7 in order to cut the cast slab longitudinally with advancement of the slab. This method allows to increase the breadth of the slab, and to reduce the energy consumption in addition to the increase in forging capability.
