Abstract

PURPOSE:To recover copper as a crystal by electrolyzing a solution obtained by etching and dissolving copper with an aqueous ferric chloride solution by using titanium or a titanium alloy as a cathode. CONSTITUTION:The used etching liquid of ferric chloride containing about 40g/l of copper is used as an anodic liquid and a ferrous chloride liquid acidified by 1N hydrochloric acid as a cathodic liquid and a glass fiber fabric or the like is used as a diaphragm and interposed between both liquids. A carbon anode plate is immersed in the anodic liquid and a cathode plate comprising titanium or a titanium alloy is immersed in a cathodic liquid and, when the electrolysis is carried out at about 50 deg.C and at current density of 3A/dm<3>, copper crystals are precipitated on a whole surface of the cathode plate at cathodic current efficiency of about 80%. Moreover, if the used etching liquid is added to the cathodic liquid and the electrolysis is succeeded while the concn. of copper is maintained at about 40g/l and the stirring by air is carried out, the crystallized copper precipitated on the cathode plate is grown and detached therefrom to be accumulated to a bottom of the cathode chamber.
