Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture MnCl2 of superior quality by neutralizing and concentrating a soln. of ferromanganese slag in sulfuric acid to remove impurities, converting the resulting MnSO4 into MnCO3, and dissolving this MnCO3 in hydrochloric acid to deposit MnCl2.
CONSTITUTION: Sulfuric acid is added to an aqueous slurry of ferromanganese slag finely pulverized to ≤200 mesh to dissolve the slag, and this soln. is adjusted to 6.0W8.5pH with alkali. By blowing air or oxygen-contg. gas, divalent iron is converted into trivalent iron, and the iron and heavy metals are precipitated as hydroxides, which are separated by filtration. The filtrate is concd. just until MnSO4 begins to crystallize, and CaSO4 deposited in removed by filtration. The filtrate is further concd. to deposit MnSO4, and this MnSO4 is centrifugally separated and washed. The washing water is discharged from the system. The resulting MnSO4 is dissolved in water, and by adding an aqueous (hydrogen)carbonate soln., MnCO3 is deposited. This MnCO3 is centrifugally separated, washed, and dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and then the soln. is concd. to crystallize MnCl2.
