Abstract
PURPOSE: To cheaply produce K2FeO4 by reacting iron hydroxide and an aq. KOH soln. of potassium hypochlorite.
CONSTITUTION: Cl is blown into an aq. KOH soln. at 30°C or below, and a by- product KCl is removed as much as possible by filtration to prepare a high concn. aq. KOC° soln. contg. about 5wt% or more of free KOH. Next iron hydroxide obtd. by neutralizing an aq. ferrous or ferric salt soln. with alkali is washed and repulped in an aq. KOH soln., and the resulting slurry is reacted with the aq. KOCl soln. in a reactor so that about 5W35wt% of free KOH is present at the end of the reaction. After the reaction the slurried reaction product is concentrated and filtered. The filtrate is recycled as raw material, and the solid component is leached with an aq. KOH soln. to dissolve K2FeO4 and a by-product KCl, which are separated from unreacted iron hydroxide. By adding flaky KOH to this soln. or concentrating the soln. the K2FeO4 is deposited and separated by filtration.
