Abstract

PURPOSE: To cheaply produce alkali ferrate by oxidizing alkali ferrite with chlorine or alkali hypochlorite in an aq. caustic alkali soln.
CONSTITUTION: Alkali ferrite represented by M2O.Fe2O3 (M is K or Na) is produced by mixing iron hydroxide, iron oxide, hematite, magnetite or the like with an alkali agent followed by oxidation roasting. Fine powder of this alkali ferrite is oxidized with chlorine or alkali hypochlorite in the presence of about 5wt% or more of free caustic alkali. After the reaction the reaction product is concentrated to a free caustic alkali concn. of about 30wt% or more and filtered. The filtrate is recycled as raw material, and the solid component is leached with an aq. caustic alkali soln. to dissolve alkali ferrate and a by-product chloride. Unreacted alkali ferrite is used as raw material. By concentrating this soln. or adding flaky caustic alkali to the soln. the alkali ferrate is deposited to recover high purity alkali ferrate.
