Abstract
PURPOSE: To ensure an easy measurement with no contact, by using two sets of transmission/ reception oscillators and then obtaining the stress of the substance to be measured based on the difference of the propagating velocity of the lateral waves produced by giving a mode conversion into the substance to be measured.
CONSTITUTION: The ultrasonic wave emitted from transmission oscillator 1 propagates into liquid 4 through wall 3 of the container in the form of the longitudinal wave. Part of the energy of this longitudinal wave receives a mode conversion into lateral wave on the interface between liquid 4 and substance 5 to be measured to propagate through substance 5. The part of the energy of this lateral wave receives a mode conversion into the longitudinal wave again to propagate through liquid 4 to be received by reception oscillator 2 through wall 3 of the container. On the other hand, the propagation is given to the ultrasonic signal via transmission oscillator 6 having the direction different by 90° from oscillator 2 plus reception oscillator 7. In this case, if some component coinciding with the vibrating direction of the lateral wave shown by the solid line in the figure in terms of stress F of substance 5, the velocity of the lateral wave varies according to the stress. This variation extent is measured in the form of the difference to the dotted line in the figure in order to obtain the stress of the substance to be measured.
