Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform the measurement in a short time continuously and nondestructively, by comparing the attenuation constant of ultrasonic wave measured through propagation toward the column-shape crystal progress direction of cast billet with that of known cast iron piece.
CONSTITUTION: When the oscillation signal is applied to the transmission and reception element 6 from the oscillator 7, ultrasonic longitudinal wave is produced and propagates as the arrow, and the ultrasonic wave reflected at the bottom of the cast billet 1 is received at the element 6, and the ultrasonic wave reflected at the bottom is attenuated while repeating the multiple reflection. Among these, the 1st and 2nd bottom reflection waves B1, B2 and the thickness of cast billet D toward ultrasonic wave propagation direction measured by a thickness gauge, are input to the microcomputer 10, and by the column-shape crystal premeasured and the attenuation constants α1, α2 at equal crystal axes, the column-shape crystal rate k is obtained with equation (I). Further, the size of crystal, and variance of segregated impurity are considered, then the average value for a plurality of points is used. Thus, the measurement can continuously and nondestructively be made in a short time.
