Abstract
PURPOSE: To make hexavalent Cr harmless by reducing it to trivalent Cr for making its throw-away easier, by a procedure in which a sulfite of Na or K is added to an industrial waste water containing hexavalent Cr to cause a photo-reductive reaction to take place under an atmospheric light condition in the open air.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolyte or an electrolysis waste water composed of the electrolyte and electrolytic sludge, containing hexavalent Cr, is mixed with 10W50g/ liter of a sulfite, e.g., Na2SO3 or K2SO3, and then the mixture is put into a transparent acrylate container impervious to ultraviolet rays or a transparent glass container and then exposed to the sunshine in the open air or allowed to stand for 1W5 days under a light environment similar to the outdoor, e.g., an airtificial sunshine device. Thus, the sulfite ion is excited by light to reduce hexavalent Cr to harmless trivalent Cr due to its strong reductive action, whereby causing the trivalent Cr to sediment in the form of Cr(OH)3.
