Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify waste water efficiently with a simple device by electrolyzing sea water with electrolytic cells having porous partition walls, adding a dilute Mg. soln. to the basic waste liquid emitting from the catholyte, and settlying Mg(OH)2 and org. insoluble matter.
CONSTITUTION: Sea water is electrolyzed with electrolytic cells having partition walls of high porosities, and dilute aq. Mg. soln. is added to the basic waste liquid emitted from the catholyte to allow the precipitate of Mg(OH)2 to form and at the same time to allow the org. impurities contained in the basic waste liquid to settle. Thence, the dark brown precipitate and org. impurities consisting essentially of Mg(OH)2 are calcined and burned and are removed as MgO, CO2, H2O, etc. This method permits easy purification of waste water with virtually the same device as far as there are sea water and electricity.
