Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the combustion of an engine in a full range of its operation especially for the range of low load operation and reduce the quantity of HC and CO to be generate, by providing swirl flow generating means actuated by the counter flow of burned gas in a combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: From the upper wall of a combustion chamber 4, guide walls 14, 14' generating a swirl flow are hung down as one body. The guide walls 14, 14' are shaped in a circular arc along the peripheries of exhaust valve ports 6, 6' and extended toward the central part of the combustion chamber 4. Their longitudinal sections are formed into a almost U-shape, and inner circumferential faces 15, 15' at a face-to-face position to the exhaust valve ports 6, 6' are formed almost vertically, while peripheral faces 16, 16' at a face-to-face position to the peripheral wall of the combustion chamber 4 are formed in a vertically concaved circular arc, further bottom faces 17, 17' connecting to each bottom ends of those inner and outer circumferential faces 15, 15', 16, 16' are formed into almost horizontal flat surfaces.
