Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it easy to detect the flaw and damage of fiber by providing metal wire or foil around the fiber for optical fiber made of quartz, multicomponent glass, plastic crystal, etc., from ent to end.
CONSTITUTION: Around the external circumference of quartz fiber 1, for example, alloy wire 2 of about 100μm in outer diameter or alloy foil, such as low-melting- point solder of 183°C m.p. consisting of 61.9wt% Sn and 38.1wt% pb, is helically wound. When the temperature of optical fiber 1 rises above 183°C through the action of laser light leaking from the flaw or break of optical fiber 1, alloy wire 2 or alloy foil 3 is broken by melting. Nd.YAG laser light, for example, is sent to optical fiber 1 by way of controller 7 and oscillator 4, and collector 6 of alloy wire 1, on the other hand, is connected to controller 7, so that laser oscillation can be stopped on the breaking of alloy wire 2. The safety can therefore by secured by easily detecting the flaw and damage of the fiber.
