Abstract
PURPOSE:To peel easily the sheath from a fiber for infrared power transmission, where the core consists of a metallic halide specially, without damaging the core, by softening thermally the sheath of the optical fiber, where thermoplastic resin materials are used for the sheath, to peel the sheath mechanically. CONSTITUTION:In case that a thermoplastic resin 24 constituting a core 23 such as a core consisting of TlI and TlBr of an optical fiber 21 for infrared transmission is peeled, the part having a peeling length (l) from an end part 22 is heated at a temperature higher than the melting point of the resin and lower than the melting point of the core 23 to soften the resin. Two wedge-shaped blades 25 and 26 having semicircular holes, whose diameters are larger than the diameter of the core 23 and smaller than the diameter of the sheath, in centers are inserted to the position (l) distant from the end part 22 of the optical fiber and are closed to carry a peeled resin 27 away in the direction of an arrow A, thus forming an exposed core 31. Thus, the sheath is peeled easily without damaging the core 23 consisting of a halide which has a low softening point and is soft and fragile.
