Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the breakage of a fiber to be detected easily and at a low cost by providing a film of electric conductor such as metals to the fiber for its overall length.
CONSTITUTION: A metal film 2 is a vapor deposition film of an about 0.1μm thickness coated on part of the side face of a quartz fiber 1 of an about 500μm outside diameter through e.g. vacuum deposition etc., and is provided for the overall length of said fiber 1. The specific resistance of a vapor deposition film of Au is about 4×10-6Ω/cm and in this case, the film has electric resistance of about 1,000Ω/m.
