Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a herbicide readily by simple operations in high yield, by reacting a novel compound 4-benzoyl-3-hydroxy-5-methylpyrazole easily obtained from hydrazine with an alkylating or allylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: Novel 4-benzoyl-3-hydroxy-5-methylpyrazole of formula V (X is halogen, nitro or lower alkyl; n is an integer 1W3) is reacted with an alkylating agent, e.g. an alkyl halide or dialkyl sulfate, or allylating agent, e.g. an allyl halide, to give the aimed compound of formula I (Y is lower alkyl or allyl). The novel compound of formula V is prepared by reacting a 3-hydroxy-5-methylpyrazole of formula IV obtained by reacting an acetoacetic ester with hydrazine with a beonzoic acid or a reactive derivative thereof in the presence of aluminum chloride.
