Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform an easy start of electric discharge in a luminous tube and reduce a length of time required for its restart, by forming main electrodes in the luminous tube into the constitution with a coil and its winding end, extended in the inside of the coil toward an axial direction of winding, and heating the electrodes for a start of electric discharge. CONSTITUTION:A main electrode of a luminous tube is constituted by a spirally wound coil 22 made of tungsten or treated tungsten and an end wire 21 formed by extending a winding end of the coil 22 in the inside of the coil further toward an axial direction of coil winding. Though this electric discharge lamp starts electric discharge if voltage is applied across main electrodes and obtains a stable state of lighting, in case of a restart for the lamp after once turned off, the electrode 2 is kept in a heated state by flowing an electric current in between the end wire 21 of the main electrode and an end part 23 of the coil 22, and then voltage is applied to across the main electrodes to start electric discharge. Also for a normal start, the main electrode may be heated.
