Abstract

PURPOSE: To react oxygen with hydrogen and circulate the dehydrated residual gas through the initial vapor-phase reaction step in chlorinating a hydrocarbon with chlorine with a high oxygen content, by passing a gas after recovering the formed chlorinated hydrocarbon and hydrogen through a catalytic bed.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrocarbon is chlorinated directly with chlorine containing a relatively large amount of oxygen, e.g. chlorine obtained by the electrolysis by the diaphragmatic process, and (A) a gas containing the unreacted hydrocarbon and oxygen after recovering the formed chlorinated hydrocarbon and (B) hydrogen are passed through a catalytic bed to react the oxygen with the hydrogen. The formed water is then removed to circulate the gas consisting of the unreacted hydrocarbon through the initial chlorinating step. The mixed gas (A) is preferably passed through a column packed with active carbon or molecular sieve to remove a small amount of the chlorinated hydrocarbon contained therein and fed to the next step. Iron-manganese oxide, copper-chromium oxide, etc. may be preferred as the caralyst.
