Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a compact distillater for the vacuum distillation of sea water or the like with a low energy consumption, by generating a vacuum portion inside a pipe having a water column of 10m or more to perform the distillation.
CONSTITUTION: Pipes 1, 2 are arranged vertically and have water columns higher than 10m respectively. The pipes 1, 2 are connected together at their nearly top ends through a pipe provided with a sluice valve 5. Stop valves 6, 7 are attached to the bottoms of the pipes 1, 2. A vessel 3 and another vessel 4 provided with a drain valve 16 are arranged below the pipes 1 and 2, respectively. At first the valves 5W7, 16 are closed, and the vessels 3, 4 are filled with sea water and fresh water, respectively, so that the valves 6, 7 are sunk below the water levels. The valve 10 is then opened to fill the pipe 1 with the sea water until air is completely evacuated from the pipe 1, while the pipe 2 is filled with the fresh water in the same manner. Thereafter, the valves 10, 11 are closed and the valves 6, 7 are opened, so that the sea water in the pipe 1 and the fresh water in the pipe 2 fall downwards into the vessels 3 and 4, respectively, under their gravities. By opening the valve 5, spaces above the water columns H, H' are maintained in a vacuum state. Under this state, the sea water in the pipe 1 heated. Consequently, water vapor flows from the pipe 1 through the valve 5 into the pipe 2, and cools the periphery of the pipe 2, so that the water vapor is condensed and falls in the state of fresh water. As a result, the fresh water in the vessel 4, in which the water level is consequently raised, is taken out through the valve 16.
