Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a ductile alloy easily cold workable into a slender or thin product by rapidly cooling a hot β-brass type Cu alloy contg. a prescribed amount of Zn and Al followed by cold working.
CONSTITUTION: A Cu alloy contg. 3W50wt% Zn, 2W15wt% Al or 10W40wt% Zn and ≤10wt% Al is refined, cast, homogenized, annealed, hot-worked, and freed of a surface oxide film to form a rod. This rod is heated to a temp. at which the alloy has a β-phase structure, and the heated rod is quenched in ice water and cold drawn at room temp. to obtain a wire without breaking. When the wire is formed into a coil spring, and the spring is similarly heat-treated, the spring shows a shape memorizing effect in a narrow temp. range above and below each tramsformation temp.
