Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a battery of a low cost and a large capacity, which has an anode made of lead dioxide and a negative electrode made of zinc, by using a caustic alkali solution of a given low concentration as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode-side and the cathode-side electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:An anode 3, which is made up of 0.45g of lead dioxide used as an anode active material and about 10wt% of graphite, is compressed and packed into an anode case 1. A separator 5 consisting of a grafted polyethylene and cellophane, a liquid holding material 6 made of nonwoven cloth, and a zinc cathode 4 made up of 0.105g of amalgamated zinc which contains about 10% of mercury and is added with carboxy celluslose, are placed over the anode 3, in that order, and the whole constitutes a battery. A caustic alkali solution of 0.5-2 molar concentration is used as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode-side and the cathode-side electrolyte. When a semipermeable membrane separator made of cellophane or the like is used, a caustic alkali solution of the same concentration as is usually used for an alkaline battery may be used as the cathode-side electrolyte. As a caustic alkali, KOH or NaOH is used. Consequently, a battery of a low cost and a large capacity can be obtained.
