Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain stabilized battery performance and increased shelf life by positioning a semipermeable membrane on a positive electrode side and a nonwoven fabric made of a specific material on a negative electrode side as a separator of an alkaline battery. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 1 formed by molding manganese oxide acting as an active material, a separator 5 also serving as an electrolyte absorbent material on a negative side, and a gelled negative electrode 6 of amalgamated zinc powder are accommodated in a container 2. Said container is sealed with a sealing plate 7 with an interposed gasket 8 to form an alkaline battery. The separator 5 interposed between the positive electrode 1 and the negative electrode 6 is formed so that its semipermeable membrane is in contact with the positive electrode and its nonwoven fabric comprising cellulose and Vinylon fibers is in contact with the negative electrode. Cellophane having 20- 40mum thickness is preferable as this semipermeable membrane, and mercerized pulp nonwoven fabric having 30-40g/m<2> weight is preferable as this cellulose.
