Abstract
PURPOSE:At least one of crystaline halides are placed in a hollow galss tube that has an outer layer of glass softening at a higher temperature than the crystal and the hollow glass tube is heat drawn to produce optical fibers transmitting rays of wave length from visible to infrared range. CONSTITUTION:Crystals of halide such as NaCl, NaBr, eutectic mixture of NaCl- AgCl or NaCl-AgBr 1 are placed in the hollow glass tube 4 that consists of the inner layer 2 and the outer layer 3. The softening point of the outer layer 3 must be higher than that of the crystals. Then, the resultant hollow glass tube 4 is drawn under heating in the furnace 7 to form the objective optical fiber 8. The drawing is sometimes followed by annealing to form refractive index distribution in the crystals by uneven precipitation of the solute during the crystallization.
