Abstract

PURPOSE: To disperse the secondary particles of calcium silicate hydrate in the primary particles, by reacting the secondary particles in a solution of sodium hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: A calcium silicate hydrate, e.g. tobermorite or xonotlite, usually consists of the secondary particles of entangled crystals. An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide is added to react with the calcium silicate hydrate under heating. The reaction is advantageously carried out with stirring; however, the dispersing effect is increased by irradiation with ultrasonic waves. In this case, the secondary particles are dispersed in the form of calcium silicate bonded to Na in the primary particles. The platy or needlelike shape of the primary particles per se, however, will not change.
