Abstract

There is provided a process for the production of ???-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate by a hydrothermal reaction of a calcium sulfate starting material in an aqueous medium in the presence of a powdery inorganic substrate, e.g. talc, silica, silicic acid, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate hemihydrate, and/or soluble anhydrous calcium sulfate. The ???-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate produced is in fibrous and/or spherical form. The ???-type calcium sulfate hemihydrate is convertible to soluble or insoluble calcium sulfate anhydrite by calcination or to calcium sulfate dihydrate by contacting it with water.
