Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible the detection of the abnormal condition such as the vertical crack of a conveyer belt by a method wherein ultrasonic beams are allowed to cross the conveyer belt in the direction of its width along the surface on its incoming side and the beams are radiated while they are being focused by means of a horn radiator.
CONSTITUTION: When a metal piece 5 hits a shoot 4 and stays therein after it has stuck in a conveyer belt 6, the conveyer belt 6 is damaged by the metal piece 5 to cause a vertical crack 11. Objects 3 to be fed fall through the crack 11 and accumulates on the incoming side 6B of the conveyer belt 6, so that they obstruct the ultrasonic beams B radiated from an ultrasonic beam transmitter 9. As a result, the strength of the ultrasonic beams inputted to a receiver 10 is reduced and the occurrence of a vertical crack 11 can be detected depending on the beam amount reduced. A conical horn is used as the ultrasonic beam transmitter to improve the focussing of ultrasonic beams B.
