Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the crater defect at the end point of weld zone and let sound welding be effected by changing the intensity of an electron beam based on the detection of nondestructive inspection which detects the melting caused by the electron beam irradiation and the frozen state right after the melting.
CONSTITUTION: The electron beam 4 irradiated by an electron gun 7 for welding butt-welds the members 1a and 1b to be welded. In this case, a transducer 8 which is capable of nondestructively detecting the piercing and freezing cycle near the end of welding is disposed near the end point of welding. The transducer 8 receives the ultrasonic reflected signal 12 from the cavity 3 in addition to the ultrasonic reflected signal 11 from the member 1a. When it is decided by a decision circuit 9 that the signal 12 is not received, the signal from the circuit 9 is input to a control circuit 10 which in turn rapidly decreases the intensity of the electron beam or makes the same zero. Namely, the welding is stopped at the time when the cavity 3 is filled by molten metal and therefore no crater defect occurs.
