Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of welding defects in a shielding gas welding method by detecting the amount of air introduced into a shielding gas from the NO obtained by reducing the NOx included in the sample of the shielding gas and controlling said amount rapidly and accuartely.
CONSTITUTION: The arc 3 is generated between a welding electrode 1 and the materials 2 to be welded, and a sheilding gas 5 such as He, Ar or CO2 is released from a shielding gas nozzle 4, whereby the weld zone 2A of the materials 2 is welded. At this time, part of the shielding gas 5 is sampled by a sampling probe 7, and is flowed in a catalyst packed layer 8, whereby the NOx contained is reduced to NO. The amount thereof is measured with an NO measuring device 9. From said value, the amount of NOx is calculated and further the amount of included air 6 is estimated. The amount of this air is made rapidly decreased, whereby the occurrence of welding defects owing to the air included in the shielding gas is prevented.
