Abstract

PURPOSE:To widen detection areas by using a light projector which projects light beams of a sheet shape wide in a horizontal direction and narrow in a vertical direction. CONSTITUTION:When an obstruction exists in any of detection areas 7, 8, 9, a part of the irregularly reflected light from the obstruction by the radiated light beams is received in a photodetector 2. The reflected light from the obstruction detected with the photodetector 2 is converted to an electric signal by a photoelectric transducer. In accordance with this electric signal, the obstruction in the rear of the vehicle is detected. The light beams 3, 4, 5 radiated from this projector 1 and the visual field 6 of the photodetector 2 are widened in a horizontal direction, whereby the detection areas 7, 8, 9 in a horizontal direction are widened.
