Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect the road surface condition independently of disturbance or the like by providing a target having a light part and a dark part on the road surface, and catching the relative pattern changes of the light reflected therefrom. CONSTITUTION:A target 11 comprising a light part 11A and a dark part 11B is proveded on the road surface 12. An image pickup device 15 picks up the image of the target 11 focused by means of an EE lens 14 which controls the quantity of the light reflected from the road surface. The video signal VS is sampled by means of a quantizer 16, quantized and coded into a plurality of bits, which are inputted to a central processor 18 through an input/output devece 17. The central processor 18 reads a reference pattern signal out from a memory 19 and decides to which road condition pattern the video signal VS coming from the image pickup device 15 corresponds.
