Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic tape which is suited for a precision analog and digital recording, by giving a partial heating and annealing to a paramagnetic alloy tape to cause a phase transformation to the heated part into a ferromagnetic region. CONSTITUTION:The YAG laser beam, the electron beam, etc. is irradiated in a belt or bit train form to the tape surface 1 of a paramagnetic alloy of Fe-Co-Mn-Cr, etc. to cause a phase transformation. Thus a ferromagnetic region 2 is obtained at the heated part. The laser beam irradiation surface is covered with the argon gas, and the other side of the surface is water-cooled. The laser beam is irradiated to the tape with the laser beam diameter restricted to a desired value while giving a travelling to the tape in a certain speed. Owing to a consecutive ferromagnetic region, a magnetic tape is obtained with an excellent surface condition, smoothness and travelling performance plus a high mechanical strength. In the same way, a magnetic recording disk, a magnetic card, etc. can be obtained by forming an annealed region.
