Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An extract extracted from a plant of the genus Epimedium with either of water or a mixed solvent of a water-miscible organic solvent with water, capable of forming a precipitate on mixing the resultant aqueous extract with an organic solvent freely miscible with water, positive to any of the anthrone-sulfuric acid reaction, ferric chloride reaction, Molisch reaction and skatole reaction, and having a λmax (nm) of 280 and 325 (shoulder) in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum. Brown powder, and pH of aqueous solution: about 6.5. Soluble in water and insoluble in a lower alchol, ketone, etc.
USE: An immunological enhancer, useful for a patient with reduced immune ability, e.g. the use togehter with an anticancer agent in a cancerous patient, and the prevention and inhibition of infectious diseases, and administered orally or by injection (subcutaneous or intramuscular route).
PROCESS: A plant of the genus Epimedium is extracted with a mixed solvent of a water-miscible organic solvent with water or water, and the resultant extract is then precipitated with a water-miscible solvent to give the aimed extract.
