Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively prevent stress corrosion cracking from occurring and also prevent cracks, if any, from propagating by a method wherein a surface of a part of a stainless steel pipe contacted with a liquid and having residual stresses is melted and then solidified to improve the structure thereof, while compressive stresses are caused to remain at other surfaces of the pipe. CONSTITUTION:Both the inside and outside surfaces of an austenitic stainless steel pipe used as a cooling-water pipe of a nuclear reactor or the like are contacted with the liquid. The surface of the pipe where the residual stresses are present is melted by using an inert-gas tungsten arc torch and is solidified to obtain a dendritic structure. Consequently, the compressive stresses remain at other surfaces to prevent the stress corrosion cracking. Accordingly, since the chromium carbide once precipitated is dissolved into austenite, chromium is distributed in crystal grains more uniformly to enhance the corrosion resistance of the steel, while the resultant dendritic structure enhances resistance to cracking. In addition, even if stress corrosion cracking should occur, the crack is prevented from propagating into the interior of the steel.
