Abstract

PURPOSE: To automatically and continuously detect the thickness of a coating film with high accuracy by a thickness detector utilizing the absorption of a light by the coating film, and to control the thickness of the coating film at a constant value by the feed-back of the detected value.
CONSTITUTION: A paint is transferred to an upper roll 3 through a lower roll 3' dipped in a paint vessel 2, and applied onto the downside surface of a steel sheet 1 being carried. Thus, the steel sheet 1 is coated with a paint film 4 at the coating zone. A coupler of thickness detectors 5 each constructed by a light source 6 and a light censor 7 are arranged at the backside and the forthside of the coating zone. One detector 5 detects a reflection intensity from the steel sheet, while the other detects another reflection intensity from both of the steel sheet and the paint film. The detected values from both of the detectors 5 are inputted to a signal processor 9, to obtain the thickness of the paint film and its deviation from a reference thickness value. The deviation is fed as an operational signal to a film thickness controller 10 which adjusts the pushing pressure of the upper roll 3 to control the thickness of the paint film.
