Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a catalyst comprising rhodium selectively distributed on the surface of a carrier, by dipping the carrier in an acidified aqueous solution of a soluble rhodium salt, dipping the carrier in an alkaline liquid, drying and reducing the treated carrier.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a water-soluble rhodium salt such as rhodium chloride, rhodium bromide, etc. is adjusted at pH1 or lower by the addition of a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. A silica or titania carrier is dipped in the solution, to impregnate with the aqueous rhodium salt solution. The impregnated carrier is then dipped in an aqueous alkaline solution such as a caustic soda, to neutralize the acid contained in the carrier and to convert the rhodium salt to rhodium hydroxide. Thereafter, the carrier is dried and reduced. The product has the rhodium salt selectively distributed on the surface of the carrier, so that the product has an enhanced catalytic effect.
