Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cold working die steel having superior flame hardenability, wear resistance, toughness, machinability and weldability by balancing the contents of Si, Mn, Cr, etc. in a low alloy steel and adding a specified amount of Nb.
CONSTITUTION: This cold working die steel contains 0.55W0.85% C, 0.80W1.50% Si, 0.80W1.50% Mn, 1.20W3.50% Cr, 0.05W0.50% V and 0.02W0.30% Nb or further contains one or more among <0.30% Ti, <0.30% Ta and <0.30% Zr. This steel is easily hardened by air cooling in flame hardening after forging, casting or other process, showing almost uniform hardness and a large hardening depth. It has superior wear resistance, toughness, machinability and build-up weldability and holds a long life when worked into cold forming dies, especially punching dies, bending dies or drawing dies.
