Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic display cell having improved response characteristics, by forming an electrochromic coloring layer of a display electrode, by depositing a transition metal oxide from a vapor phase state under an atmosphere containing halogen. CONSTITUTION:On light-transmittable base 1 made with glass, etc., display electrode 2 is formed in a desired shape and to a desired size and then electrochromic coloring layer 3 is formed on the display part of display electrode 2. For the formation of this coloring layer 3, base 1 having display electrode 2 is placed in a vacuum tank, in which an atmosphere of halogen gas or a gaseous halide of transition metal is produced. In this atmosphere, a layer of a transition metal oxide containing halogen elements is deposited on display electrode 2 by evaporating the transition metal, such as tungsten oxide and molybdenum oxide, to form the coloring layer. The layer of the transition metal oxide can be obtained not only in the said evaporating method, but also in sputtering, ion-plating and CVD methods, etc.
