Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled glass consisted of anhydrous modified alkali silicate and suitable for use in the manufacture of inorg. foam with superior water resistance, strength, incombustibility and high heat insulation by heating and melting an anhydrous alkali silicate and a modifier contg. boron oxide.
CONSTITUTION: An anhydrous alkali silicate represented by formula R2O.xSiO2 (where R is an alkali metal) is mixed with a modifier (MO) contg. boron oxide in a ratio in which the resulting glass has ≤700°C m.p. and a composition satisfies the equations I, II, III. Boron oxide alone is used as the modifier, or boron oxide is combined with oxide selected among aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, calcium oxide, lead oxide, copper oxide and iron oxide. The mixture is then melted by heating at about 900W1,400°C and reacted for about several tens minutes W several hours to obtain the titled glass.
