Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance which is a perfume having green note, in high purity, from a mixture of the titled compound and 2-vinyl crotonaldehyde having a boiling point close to that of the titled compound, by contacting the mixture with hydrogen gas in the presence of a platinum group catalyst thereby hydrogenating the latter compound selectively to a compound having large boiling point difference from the former compound, and distilling the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing n-hexenylaldehyde and 2-vinyl crotonalde- hyde obtained e.g. by the dehydration of the aldol condensation reaction product of acetaldehyde and n-butylaldehyde, is brought into contact with hydrogen gas in the presence of a platinum group catalyst, pref. a palladium catalyst to effect the selective hydrogenation of 2-vinyl crotonaldehyde, and the obtained mixture is distilled to obtain the titled compound. The amount of the platinum group catalyst is 0.01W30wt%, pref. 0.1W1.0wt% based on the mixture used as the raw material. The hydrogenation reaction is pref. carried out at 0W150°C under the hydrogen partial pressure of ≤50kg/cm2.
