Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover concentrate hydrochloric acid, FeCl3 and Cr(OH)3, by oxidizing Fe and Cr contained in a waste hydrochloric acid, extracting the oxidized Fe and Cr with a specific solvent, and extracting the resultant extract back with water, and distilling the extraction residue through extraction.
CONSTITUTION: An oxidizing agent, e.g. O2 or air, is allowed to react with a waste hydrochloric acid containing Fe and Cr to oxidize the Fe2+ to Fe3+. Hydrochloric acid is then added to the oxidation solution to increase the hydrochloric acid concentration to 6M/l or higher. The Fe3+ is then extracted with a solvent consisting of 30W100vol% neutral phosphate, e.g. tributyl phosphate, and 70W0vol% diluent, e.g. kerosine, as a HFeCl4 complex. The resultant extract is extracted with water back to recover the complex as a HCl-FeCl3 mixture. The exraction residue is then subjected to the extractive distillation while circulating a concentrated solution of CrCl3 to recover concentrated hydrochloric acid. On the other hand, chlorides which are obtained as a distillation residue and consist of Cr essentially are neutralized with an alkali and recovered as Cr(OH)3.
