Abstract
PURPOSE: Metals included in manganese nodules are leached out with an aqueous acidic ferrous chloride solution and ferric chloride in the leaching solution is solvent extracted with a tertiary amine, whereby useful metals are collected efficiently.
CONSTITUTION: Manganese nodules are crushed, dissolved in an acidic aqueous solution with heat and then filtered to separate the insoluble residue. At this time, ferrous chloride is oxidized by manganese dioxide that is the major component in the manganese nodules to ferric chloride. The filtrate is solvent extrated with a tertiary amine diluted with a hydrocarbon solvent to remoe ferric chloride. The extract solvent is extracted with water to give an aqueous ferric chloride solution and the solvent is reused. The aqueous solution containing nickel, cobalt, manganese and other metals, after separation of ferric chloride, is wet treated in accordance with a known method to recover useful metals such as nickel, cobalt and so on.
